Yes, it’s possible with a very heavily planted tank. I’ve never tried it, but here’s a link I have saved that has a lot of good info about that:http://naturalaquariums.com/
Think she mentioned using smaller fish like guppies and such.

You’ll hit a few problems. First, you won’t be using a heater, and if you do, the warm water won’t circulate before it cools anyway. So stick with something small and cool-water, like white clouds.
Second, it needs a huge surface area. A 40 breeder is a minimum for starting on this.
Third, be sure to keep up on your water changes. Vacuum the gravel weekly.
Fourth, be sure everything is kosher with the plants. Proper lighting, etc. You’re going to want fast-growing plants to consume the ammonia, which will demand high lighting.
You’ll probably hit more bumps, too…but it’s not impossible.

You’re talking about something similar to El Natural, a method espoused by Diana Walstad. Check out this message board for more info; I visit there quite regularly: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forum… You can look around at the other message boards, too, as they’re very informative.

At TheExoticFish there is a member that keeps “Natural Tanks”. They are planted heavily enough that the plants provide enough oxygen for the fish they keep.
