Should Communities Have The Right To Opt-out Of Multiculturalism?
Most Western countries have adopted multiculturalism as the accepted cultural format for their society. Any country or community that rejects multiculturalism typically receives heavy criticism from the media and politicians alike (see front cover of the Independent – 1st September 2007). Is it acceptable, in the interest of maintaining cultural integrity and global diversity, for communities to opt-out of a multicultural framework?

Acceptable or not, it isn’t possible. Can you opt out of a sun rise?

In the interest of preserving a particular culture, I can appreciate a community wishing to opt out. However, the world gets smaller every day and maintaining that uniqueness will become more and more diffucult.

“The right to opt-out of multiculturalism” sounds very like what the Apartheid regime in South Africa tried to do. It ultimately failed and was proved to be both morally and socially unsustainable.

Not “any community”, just primarily Caucasian communities. It’s perfectly acceptable to have an all “Korean” community, an all “Latino” community or an all “African-American” community…anything like that. Multiculturalism is only a virtue when applied to those of European descent.

This is England 2007,my friend, you have no rights!! Your future depends on who tells you what to do and how to do it without you having a say in it. You,too, will retire one day and you will live like a king on your £54 weekly pension. Enough to buy you curry powder and rice. A loaf of bread will be a luxury. Worked all your life? Tough!
Do not worry, though, because you might snuff it before retirement age and,who knows, you may just have saved enough to get yourself a decent hole in the ground or a place in the cremation chamber. Over and done with, another objector out of the way. Your government is not listening to you so forget about having options because this is England 2007 and you have no rights.

Multiculturalism can work and be of benefit to a community.
But when it is implemented by heavy handed legislation and political correctness it causes divisions, and defeats the object.

“Communities” already have this right. If everyone’s in agreement, no one has to sell their house/land to non-members of said communities….but not everyone in most communities are of like mind. Who speaks for a community if the community is divided (and it IS divided if someone within the community sells land/property to non-community members)? If someone lives in a community that’s becoming “multicultural”, then that “community” doesn’t want to opt-out. One only needs to buy into one that does.

They can try, but their failure is guaranteed.
Forces both internal and external to the community will not allow it.

I think the bigger question is how can countries opt out of globalization and the new world order. Multiculturalism never works – has no one ever heard of Sarajevo? I would mention the Tower of Bable but don’t want to set off the atheists.

Lots of communities can and do. Churches, social clubs, private schools, etc., all can maintain whatever cultural identity they want. What’s not acceptable is for neighborhoods or municipalities to opt out of multiculturalism. They don’t need to actively embrace other cultures, but they do need to show some basic level of respect for all human beings.

Here’s my experience with multiculturalism. I had a girl cry on my shoulder because she was being harrassed by a couple of guys. They did not like the idea of females given the right to delegate work to them, so they harrassed her to no end. I filed a whole series of EEO complaint about sexual harrassment, because immigrants from certain country has a sexist culture. THanks to multiculturalism, they feel that their sexist belief is not only acceptable but superior to American culture.
